[00:01:22] So Nick is speaking in English and he's talking about the importance of outlines and creating a sermon outline and having a plan and a destination for our sermons.

[00:03:40] What do you think I did when I realized that the part that I was singing is related to making a contour or skice?

[00:03:48] I made a contour.
[00:03:50] An outline about outlines.
[00:03:52] And a contour in relation to contour.
[00:03:54] Mind-blowing, huh?
[00:03:57] All right.
[00:03:57] That's how much I love outlines.
[00:03:59] I wrote an outline about outlining.

[00:04:21] Okay, so first of all, let's talk about why you need an outline.
[00:04:25] Okay, prevo pitanje je zašto trebamo konturu?
[00:04:27] I have a bad habit that I picked up from my father.
[00:04:30] Jam jednu manu koju sam pokupio od svog oca.
[00:04:33] When I was a kid, sometimes my family, we would all get into the family car.
[00:04:43] And then my dad would start driving.
[00:04:46] The only thing is that sometimes he started driving without knowing where we were going.

[00:04:59] So I played baseball growing up and for like half the year, we would travel all over Colorado where I grew up and we'd go to tournaments.

[00:05:14] And sometimes it would be like time to leave in a big rush.
[00:05:17] You gotta put all the stuff in the car and then get the family into the car.

[00:05:25] So we pull out of the driveway onto the street, start driving.
[00:05:30] And then after some time, my mom would ask my dad, you know where we're going, right?

[00:05:45] And it wasn't always a problem.
[00:05:47] It wasn't a problem until we got out of our neighborhood.
[00:05:55] But once we got onto a main road or a big intersection, we had to choose a direction.
[00:06:05] And sometimes that would be a problem.
[00:06:06] He would go west when we needed to go south, for example.
[00:06:13] And I guess his theory was that it's easier to change direction once you're already moving.
[00:06:21] Meniti direkciju kad si već krenuo negde.
[00:06:24] And sometimes he'd get lucky.

[00:06:27] The direction he started driving in, it turned out to be the direction we needed to go.

[00:07:10] When I first started preaching, I approached preparing sermons in the same way my dad approached driving to baseball games.
[00:07:27] I just started going without having any destination in mind.
[00:07:35] I would take my text and then I would just like start writing thoughts down, like thoughts that I had or things that I heard other people say about that text.

[00:07:51] And the result was a message full of random disconnected thoughts.

[00:08:05] Right, like stuff that was true, but it wasn't connected to each other at all.

[00:08:16] You could call this message of preaching read and ramble.

[00:08:27] Right, like I would read a text, I'd read a verse or two.

[00:08:34] And then I'd drop some truth on people.

[00:08:38] At least that's what I thought I was doing.

[00:08:41] Hey, here's a verse and here's a truth bomb.
[00:08:43] Boom!

[00:08:46] And I thought that, then I'd read another verse.
[00:08:50] I'd say something else.
[00:08:53] But the things I said weren't necessarily connected to each other at all.
[00:09:00] They're just kind of like random thoughts that I had about stuff.
[00:09:06] And whereas I thought I was teaching the passage,
[00:09:12] The truth was I really just used those verses as like springboards
[00:09:16] to talk about all kinds of random things that I thought.
[00:09:30] Now sometimes, like my dad, I got lucky.
[00:09:36] I ended up going in the right direction, even though I, you know, kind of stumbled into it.
[00:09:46] But most of the time, because I didn't start with the destination in mind.
[00:09:54] And I had no plan to get to the destination.
[00:09:59] I did the same thing to people with my preaching that my dad did with his driving.
[00:10:09] I wasted a lot of time.
[00:10:13] I wasted a lot of energy.
[00:10:16] And I frustrated the people who were along for the ride.
[00:10:22] That's why you need an outline.
[00:10:25] Because the goal of expository preaching is not to just share a bunch of random thoughts
[00:10:32] and a couple Bible verses.
[00:10:42] The goal is to present, to reveal the text, the main point of the text
[00:10:48] in a way that is cohesive and helps people to understand it and respond appropriately.
[00:10:53] The goal is to your message and to your message be connected, to it is a meaning and to truly express the Holy Spirit to people.
[00:11:03] You want to help people to see what the text says.
[00:11:07] You want to help people to see what the text says.
[00:11:12] And to understand why it's so incredibly important to them personally.
[00:11:21] How it applies to their lives and how they should respond appropriately.
[00:11:30] In other words, in a sermon we're taking our listeners on a journey.
[00:11:40] From where they are to where God wants to take them.
[00:11:43] From where they are to where God wants to be.
[00:11:48] And so, each step in our message should progressively lead them towards that destination.
[00:11:55] So, every step in our prophecy should lead them towards that destination.
[00:12:01] So, to do that, we need a map and we need a process.
[00:12:07] And that's where your outline comes in.
[00:12:09] And that's where the text goes.
[00:12:12] And that's where the text goes.
[00:12:12] You start by learning and realizing what is the destination that the text wants to bring them to.
[00:12:18] First, to understand which destination is which text wants to bring them to.
[00:12:25] Then you map out the steps and progressively move them one step at a time through the text towards that destination.
[00:12:40] Okay.
[00:12:45] You need to write the destination how to make an outline.
[00:12:48] Okay.
[00:12:48] Perfect.
[00:12:49] How to build an outline.
[00:12:51] How to build an outline, joo.
[00:12:56] is to identify the big idea of the text.
[00:13:02] In any text, there will always be a big idea,
[00:13:06] meaning a particular doctrine,
[00:13:07] or an argument that's being made in the text
[00:13:10] that the passage is presenting.
[00:13:12] U svakom tekstu postoji doktrina,

[00:13:20] After you've identified the big idea of the text,
[00:13:23] then you're going to want to begin to build a case,

[00:13:33] To do this, you're going to want to identify
[00:13:41] some main points
[00:13:47] from the text itself,
[00:13:49] or maybe from related passages in the Bible.
[00:13:57] But your goal is to take that big idea
[00:14:00] and then bring it to bear,
[00:14:02] like help people understand why it's so important.
[00:14:05] And you want to compel them
[00:14:07] in a way that moves them from where they are
[00:14:09] to where God wants them to be.
[00:14:26] And the most effective way to do this
[00:14:32] is by building a progression with your points.
[00:14:39] Like a trail of breadcrumbs
[00:14:42] to lead someone to your cabin.
[00:14:43] Right?
[00:14:44] Like a breadcrumbs
[00:14:45] that leads you to some
[00:14:47] of the columns.
[00:14:48] Right?
[00:14:48] In other words,
[00:14:49] point one leads to point two,
[00:14:51] leads to point three,
[00:14:52] and you're leading them with these breadcrumbs
[00:14:54] to the place you want to take them.
[00:15:01] And the, yeah, so it will lead to the big idea.
[00:15:08] So, ideally, you want to build this progression of thought.
[00:15:11] In other words,
[00:15:11] you don't want your points to just be
[00:15:13] independent thoughts,
[00:15:14] but you want them to work together.
[00:15:23] Each point, right, is advancing your argument.
[00:15:31] So, we're taking people on a journey,
[00:15:33] starting with where they're at right now.
[00:15:39] And leading them step by step,
[00:15:41] progressively,
[00:15:42] through the text,
[00:15:43] to the main point of the text.
[00:15:49] Okay.
[00:15:50] Here's my process.
[00:15:52] Moj proces.
[00:15:52] Listen, there's not just one good way to do this.
[00:15:55] That's what you need to know.
[00:15:59] I'll just tell you how I do it.
[00:16:01] I think Mike probably does it different,
[00:16:02] and probably you're going to do it different.
[00:16:03] But here's what I do.
[00:16:10] One of the benefits I've found with outlining
[00:16:12] is that not only does it give you a map,
[00:16:15] but it gives you a process.
[00:16:18] One thing that is very useful
[00:16:19] in terms of doing the process,
[00:16:22] is that it's not only that it gives you a map,
[00:16:24] but it gives you a process.
[00:16:26] And having a process
[00:16:27] helps me write good sermons
[00:16:30] in less time.
[00:16:40] And I know if I use this process,
[00:16:43] I will consistently preach good sermons.
[00:16:50] And that's the goal,
[00:16:51] to preach good sermons.
[00:16:53] Not to preach,
[00:16:53] I didn't say preach great sermons,
[00:16:54] I said preach good sermons.
[00:16:56] And that's the point,
[00:16:57] that they preach good sermons.
[00:16:58] I don't say no true or false,
[00:17:00] but good sermons.
[00:17:01] A brother made the point earlier,
[00:17:03] and I want to just echo that same point.
[00:17:12] Your job is to preach a good sermon,
[00:17:13] and only God, by His Spirit,
[00:17:16] can take that good sermon
[00:17:16] and make it a great sermon
[00:17:18] in the hearts of people,
[00:17:19] in people's minds and hearts.
[00:17:28] If you're always trying to preach great sermons,
[00:17:31] sometimes you can be trying to do something yourself
[00:17:34] that really only God can do.
[00:17:45] The definition of a good sermon
[00:17:49] means all the essential elements
[00:17:50] are there, in place.
[00:17:55] You're rightly dividing the scriptures.
[00:17:58] You're applying it.
[00:17:59] You're presenting it well.
[00:18:01] You're showing how it points to Jesus
[00:18:03] as the great hero.
[00:18:14] It's the role of the Holy Spirit
[00:18:16] to take that good sermon
[00:18:17] and make it great
[00:18:19] in the hearts and minds of the hearers.
[00:18:28] And that's why
[00:18:29] the same sermon
[00:18:31] will have a different effect
[00:18:32] on different people
[00:18:33] in the same room.
[00:18:40] One person,
[00:18:42] they're going to be falling asleep
[00:18:43] while you talk.
[00:18:47] But this other person is going to,
[00:18:49] their life is being changed
[00:18:50] as you speak.
[00:18:52] A osoba pored nje,

[00:19:20] I have watched friends of mine
[00:19:23] kill their church
[00:19:24] by spending 40 hours a week
[00:19:27] preparing sermons.
[00:19:37] So what I've done,
[00:19:38] I created a template
[00:19:39] that I use every week
[00:19:41] and I pull up this document.
[00:19:42] It's a blank template
[00:19:43] and it has a few parts.
[00:19:54] So step one is the big idea.
[00:19:59] I write down the big idea
[00:20:01] of the passage in one sentence.
[00:20:08] If you can't summarize
[00:20:10] the message of your sermon
[00:20:11] in one sentence,
[00:20:18] then you don't yet know
[00:20:19] what you're talking about.
[00:20:20] And if you don't know
[00:20:22] what you're talking about,
[00:20:24] how do you expect anybody else
[00:20:25] to know what you're talking about?
[00:20:30] So I put my message,
[00:20:31] I boil it down to one sentence.
[00:20:33] If no one else remembers
[00:20:34] anything I say,
[00:20:35] you remember one sentence.
[00:20:37] So if someone
[00:20:41] doesn't realize
[00:20:42] anything about my sermon,
[00:20:45] I'll repeat that sentence
[00:20:46] several times
[00:20:47] throughout the sermon.
[00:20:51] Because the mark
[00:20:52] of a good teacher
[00:20:53] is repetition.
[00:20:57] Let me say that

[00:30:08] The last thing I want to say is that
[00:30:13] the example of my contours
[00:30:15] from 2 Corinthians 7
[00:30:16] from 2 to 16.
[00:30:19] Okay, so here's the big idea.
[00:30:20] And that's kind of long.
[00:30:21] Usually it's shorter,
[00:30:22] but here's the big idea for this sermon.

[00:30:27] Okay, the remedy for grief and guilt
[00:30:29] is turning to him
[00:30:31] who bore our griefs
[00:30:33] and provides present comfort

[00:30:49] Number one, the remedy for grief and guilt.
[00:30:51] You see, it's actually in the sentence.
[00:30:57] I'm going to introduce it by saying
[00:31:00] we all experience grief.
[00:31:02] We have a problem where we feel guilt.
[00:31:10] We need a remedy.
[00:31:13] Where can it be found?
[00:31:16] And then my second point,
[00:31:18] which is there in the big idea,
[00:31:20] it's by turning to him
[00:31:21] who bore our griefs.
[00:31:24] And there I look at verses 9 through 12.
[00:31:33] And then my third point,
[00:31:35] then, is the end of that sentence.
[00:31:37] The one who not only did those things,
[00:31:39] but he provides comfort presently
[00:31:41] and hope eternally.
[00:31:47] And in the beginning,
[00:31:48] I build an introduction
[00:31:49] by showing why this is so needed
[00:31:52] and important.
[00:31:57] With my conclusion,
[00:31:58] I show that Jesus bore our griefs
[00:32:00] and took our guilt on himself.
[00:32:03] In conclusion,
[00:32:06] I tell you how Jesus
[00:32:07] has been on our tongue,
[00:32:08] our criss,
[00:32:09] how He has been on the cross.
[00:32:11] And we can receive that grace
[00:32:13] through faith and repentance.
[00:32:20] And so,
[00:32:21] that's my process.
[00:32:24] But here's my point.
[00:32:26] You need an outline.
[00:32:28] You're taking your listeners
[00:32:29] on a journey.
[00:32:33] You need a map and a process.
[00:32:35] You need a map
[00:32:36] and you need a process.
[00:32:37] Your goal is not just
[00:32:38] to give them
[00:32:39] your random thoughts
[00:32:40] and read some verses
[00:32:41] from the Bible.
[00:32:42] So, you start by identifying
[00:32:53] your destination
[00:32:53] and then making a plan
[00:32:55] to get there.
[00:33:00] That's what your outline is.
[00:33:02] So, it's a point of contours.
