[00:00:19] All leaders in some way, shape, or form, good leaders know who they are following.
[00:00:40] On today's program, we'll see how Paul's letters encouraged the early church leaders to stand firm in their faith and lead by example in the way of Jesus.
[00:00:49] And now here is part two of Cheryl's message titled, Introduction to the Pastoral Epistles.
[00:01:19] Psalm 16 says, in the presence of the Lord there is joy, and at His right hand there are pleasures forevermore.
[00:01:29] I think sometimes we are such a bad example of what it is to serve Jesus.
[00:01:37] Jesus is joy.
[00:01:39] Joy.
[00:01:40] He always did those things that gave the Father joy.
[00:01:44] I always do those things, John chapter 8, that please my Father or elate my Father or bring joy to my Father.
[00:01:54] You see, Jesus just didn't do like, I always obey and I keep the standard.
[00:02:00] No.
[00:02:00] He said, I'm always delighting my Father.
[00:02:04] I'm always making my Father smile.
[00:02:07] Isn't that what you want to do?
[00:02:10] Isn't that how you want to lead others?
[00:02:13] And say, come with me and let's put a smile on God's face.
[00:02:18] Let's just make God so happy today because we can.
[00:02:23] Let's lead people to joy because joy is something that God has for all of us.
[00:02:31] We do live in perplexing times.
[00:02:37] Times like Timothy and Titus and Nusiphorus and Philemon lived in.
[00:02:43] And the time that we live in, this perplexing time, begs for leaders.
[00:02:50] Begs for women who will be willing to lead.
[00:02:54] Too many people want to sit on the sidelines and critique the game.
[00:03:00] They want to sit on the sidelines and critique the leaderships.
[00:03:04] Well, if I was quarterback right now, I wouldn't have done a Hail Mary.
[00:03:08] If I was the halfback, I wouldn't have done whatever halfback or that halfback did.
[00:03:13] Because I'm not real sure what halfbacks do.
[00:03:15] I know my dad played halfback in college.
[00:03:18] We sit there and we critique the leadership.
[00:03:21] I don't know why he used that word and he does this.
[00:03:24] And that church had masks and this church doesn't have masks.
[00:03:28] And we're always critiquing the leadership.
[00:03:34] That's because we're not leaders.
[00:03:36] When you begin to lead, you have compassion for other leaders.
[00:03:41] You know that the minute you lead, and this is the bad news about leadership,
[00:03:46] you get on Satan's radar.
[00:03:48] And that's why we need, as leaders, as women who are all called to be leaders,
[00:03:55] to support one another, to be for one another.
[00:04:00] But have you noticed that there are so many people who are staying home
[00:04:05] and just critiquing leadership from the comfort of their living room,
[00:04:10] watching church instead of being part of the church
[00:04:14] and being in the church and being a leader in the church
[00:04:18] or a leader in their community.
[00:04:20] But God is not, not, get this, not calling us to complain.
[00:04:29] Do you realize that complaining is not a spiritual gift?
[00:04:33] And the children of Israel were in trouble over and over and over again for complaining.
[00:04:41] God is not calling us to compare.
[00:04:46] In fact, in Corinthians, Paul would say,
[00:04:51] those that compare themselves to themselves are not wise.
[00:04:55] It is not wise to compare.
[00:04:59] Nor are we called to critique,
[00:05:04] to critique the leadership, to critique each other,
[00:05:07] to critique the church.
[00:05:11] But we are called to get in the game and start leading.
[00:05:18] But as a leader, which you are all called to be,
[00:05:23] every single person who came to Joyful Life,
[00:05:26] when you signed that card,
[00:05:27] you didn't realize you were actually signing up for leadership.
[00:05:30] You're called by God to lead.
[00:05:33] But good leaders must know who they are following.
[00:05:39] They must know personally, intimately,
[00:05:44] the one they are following.
[00:05:47] They must be able to say what he likes and what he dislikes,
[00:05:51] what his habits are,
[00:05:54] the way he works,
[00:05:56] the way he speaks,
[00:05:57] the intonations of his voice.
[00:05:59] You must know Jesus personally.
[00:06:05] Next, you must know the message of Jesus,
[00:06:12] what he says,
[00:06:14] what he offers,
[00:06:16] what he wants to give.
[00:06:17] You must know the hope of Jesus.
[00:06:20] What are Jesus' plans?
[00:06:23] We're told that we are the inheritance,
[00:06:26] that for the joy that was set before him,
[00:06:29] he endured the cross,
[00:06:30] despising the shame,
[00:06:32] thinking about us,
[00:06:34] believers,
[00:06:35] who are his inheritance.
[00:06:37] What is the hope of Jesus?
[00:06:40] Remember how he said to Pilate,
[00:06:42] my kingdom is not now of this world.
[00:06:46] There is a coming day
[00:06:48] when Jesus will rule and reign on the earth,
[00:06:52] but when he's king,
[00:06:54] he will be an accessible king,
[00:06:56] a king that we can touch
[00:06:58] and have conversations with,
[00:07:00] do lunch with.
[00:07:01] I'm not sure if coffee's going to be
[00:07:02] in the millennium or not,
[00:07:04] but if so,
[00:07:06] I'm making an appointment.
[00:07:09] We must know what he has given us,
[00:07:11] what is ours for this mission of leadership.
[00:07:17] What has he equipped us with?
[00:07:19] You know,
[00:07:20] so many times we have those things
[00:07:21] that we already need
[00:07:23] and we don't even realize it.
[00:07:25] I think about the widow woman
[00:07:26] that came to Elisha and said,
[00:07:28] help me.
[00:07:29] They're about to take my sons
[00:07:31] because I owe a debt
[00:07:33] and conscript them into slavery.
[00:07:36] And Elisha said to her,
[00:07:38] what is in your house?
[00:07:39] And she said,
[00:07:40] nothing but a little bit of oil.
[00:07:42] And then he told her,
[00:07:43] borrow every vessel
[00:07:45] you possibly can from neighbors.
[00:07:47] Find all the ones
[00:07:48] that you possibly have in your house.
[00:07:50] Go into your house
[00:07:51] and begin to take
[00:07:52] that little bit of oil
[00:07:53] and fill every vessel.
[00:07:57] And she found that
[00:07:58] what she already had in her house,
[00:08:01] once touched by God,
[00:08:03] was enough.
[00:08:05] Moses,
[00:08:05] when he said to the Lord,
[00:08:07] I don't know how I'm supposed to lead.
[00:08:08] God said,
[00:08:09] Moses,
[00:08:10] what's in your hand?
[00:08:10] He says,
[00:08:11] oh, this?
[00:08:12] It's a staff.
[00:08:13] God said,
[00:08:14] throw it down
[00:08:14] and it became a snake.
[00:08:16] Then God said,
[00:08:17] pick it up
[00:08:18] and it became a rod again.
[00:08:20] And with that rod,
[00:08:22] Moses went into Pharaoh's court
[00:08:25] and demanded the release
[00:08:27] of the Israelites.
[00:08:30] With that rod,
[00:08:31] he brought a plague
[00:08:32] of locusts
[00:08:34] and frogs
[00:08:35] and lice.
[00:08:37] With that rod,
[00:08:39] the Red Sea parted.
[00:08:43] You see,
[00:08:44] you need to know
[00:08:45] what has God
[00:08:46] already given you?
[00:08:48] What do you have
[00:08:49] for this journey?
[00:08:51] You need to know
[00:08:53] what he is doing.
[00:09:01] You need to recognize
[00:09:03] his work.
[00:09:03] work.
[00:09:04] This is the Lord
[00:09:06] and I want to be
[00:09:07] part of what
[00:09:09] the Lord
[00:09:10] is doing.
[00:09:11] You need to recognize
[00:09:12] where he is going.
[00:09:15] Where is he going?
[00:09:17] And get
[00:09:18] behind him
[00:09:19] because you're following
[00:09:21] Jesus
[00:09:22] and others
[00:09:23] will follow you.
[00:09:25] You need to know
[00:09:27] what the deterrence,
[00:09:29] the distractors,
[00:09:32] the detractors,
[00:09:33] the detainers,
[00:09:34] the drainers,
[00:09:35] and the disasters
[00:09:36] and delays
[00:09:37] that will be in the way.
[00:09:38] Did you get that?
[00:09:41] Wasn't that delightful?
[00:09:44] The deterrence,
[00:09:46] distractors,
[00:09:47] because you're going
[00:09:47] to find all these.
[00:09:48] As I was looking
[00:09:49] at Timothy
[00:09:49] trying to find
[00:09:50] a name for all
[00:09:51] the things
[00:09:52] that Paul was
[00:09:53] warning Timothy about
[00:09:54] and then later
[00:09:54] Titus about,
[00:09:56] I found there
[00:09:56] to be deterrents,
[00:09:58] distractors,
[00:09:59] detractors,
[00:10:00] detainers,
[00:10:01] drainers,
[00:10:02] disasters,
[00:10:03] and delays.
[00:10:03] And we'll kind of
[00:10:05] identify those
[00:10:06] as we go through
[00:10:07] the book of
[00:10:07] 1 and 2 Timothy
[00:10:09] what they are.
[00:10:10] A good leader
[00:10:11] not only knows
[00:10:12] these things
[00:10:13] but he is prepared
[00:10:14] for them.
[00:10:16] He is prepared.
[00:10:17] He is not
[00:10:19] taken back
[00:10:20] when these things
[00:10:21] happen
[00:10:21] because he knows
[00:10:23] they are part
[00:10:23] and parcel
[00:10:24] to leading.
[00:10:26] A good leader
[00:10:27] therefore will
[00:10:28] model how
[00:10:29] to deal
[00:10:29] with deterrents,
[00:10:32] distractors,
[00:10:32] detractors,
[00:10:33] detainers,
[00:10:34] drainers,
[00:10:35] disasters,
[00:10:35] and delays.
[00:10:36] He will exemplify
[00:10:38] good leadership
[00:10:39] to others
[00:10:40] but a good leader
[00:10:42] will also
[00:10:43] pass down
[00:10:44] to others.
[00:10:45] He will invest
[00:10:46] in others
[00:10:47] all that has
[00:10:49] been invested
[00:10:50] in him.
[00:10:51] In 2 Corinthians
[00:10:54] chapter 1
[00:10:55] Paul said
[00:10:56] the God
[00:10:57] of all comfort
[00:10:58] comforted us
[00:10:59] so that we
[00:11:00] might be able
[00:11:01] to comfort
[00:11:01] others.
[00:11:03] In 2 Timothy
[00:11:04] 2-2
[00:11:04] and isn't
[00:11:05] that easy?
[00:11:06] Just think
[00:11:07] 2-2-2
[00:11:08] Paul said
[00:11:09] and the things
[00:11:10] that you have
[00:11:10] heard from me
[00:11:11] among many
[00:11:12] witnesses
[00:11:12] commit these
[00:11:14] to faithful
[00:11:14] men
[00:11:15] who will be
[00:11:15] able to
[00:11:16] teach others
[00:11:17] also.
[00:11:18] Years ago
[00:11:18] I was at
[00:11:19] Target
[00:11:20] and I saw
[00:11:20] this fountain
[00:11:21] and it was
[00:11:22] three pots
[00:11:23] and the big
[00:11:24] pot was
[00:11:25] pointed to
[00:11:25] the second
[00:11:26] pot which
[00:11:26] was pointed
[00:11:27] to the
[00:11:27] third pot
[00:11:28] and as
[00:11:29] fountains
[00:11:29] go the
[00:11:29] water was
[00:11:30] all recycled
[00:11:31] back to
[00:11:31] the first
[00:11:32] pot
[00:11:33] and I
[00:11:33] thought
[00:11:33] I want
[00:11:34] that fountain
[00:11:35] but it
[00:11:36] was more
[00:11:36] money
[00:11:36] than I
[00:11:37] wanted
[00:11:37] to spend
[00:11:38] but I
[00:11:39] loved
[00:11:40] that fountain
[00:11:41] and I
[00:11:41] just think
[00:11:42] that's
[00:11:43] our
[00:11:43] mission
[00:11:44] what you
[00:11:45] receive
[00:11:46] you are
[00:11:47] to pour

[00:11:49] others
