[00:00:13] Hi and welcome to When She Leads, a podcast for Women in Ministry.
[00:00:17] In this episode we are releasing one of our breakout sessions from our 2023 Equipped Freight Purpose Conference.
[00:00:25] I pray it encourages you.
[00:00:29] So my name is Sonia Trujillo.
[00:00:31] I am from Calvary Chapel, South Los Angeles.
[00:00:35] You may be in many of you who did not know that there was a church in South Los Angeles.
[00:00:40] There is.
[00:00:40] My husband is the senior pastor.
[00:00:42] We have been there for over 20 years.
[00:00:45] My am married.
[00:00:47] Febber will be 30 years.
[00:00:49] I have three grown children and three grandchildren.
[00:00:54] So I am and then that would, that's what happens when you start at 16.
[00:00:58] So I don't, I don't recommend it to anybody but that's my BC days right?
[00:01:03] So my topic is teaching the Bible, understanding the power and importance of teaching
[00:01:09] God's Word.
[00:01:10] And I will be sharing about the purpose, the methods and the dangers of being a teacher
[00:01:16] of God's Word.
[00:01:17] So we teach the Bible because we care.
[00:01:20] That's first and foremost.
[00:01:22] We teach because we care about the condition of the people.
[00:01:26] Listen, if you don't care about the condition of the people, don't teach.
[00:01:31] Don't teach.
[00:01:33] If you don't care about it because it's been said that no one cares how much you know
[00:01:37] until they know how much you care.
[00:01:40] And so we know that the Bible in fact teaches us in first Corinthians 13 that no
[00:01:45] matter how intelligent you are, how spiritually gifted you are, even how religious
[00:01:51] you are, if you're even willing to just burn your flesh, if you're willing to give
[00:01:55] everything of yourself to be religious that people can still tune you out.
[00:02:01] If you don't have a genuine love and a care for them, if they do not sense that what
[00:02:06] you are doing is because you genuinely care about them, they will tune you out and you
[00:02:11] will not have the impact in their life that you had hoped to have.
[00:02:16] And so we know that we want to teach the Bible because we absolutely care about the condition
[00:02:21] of people.
[00:02:22] The Bible teaches that in Matthew 1234, that out of the abundance of the heart the
[00:02:28] mouth speaks.
[00:02:30] So before you and I ever open our mouth, we need to pray and we need to ask God to give
[00:02:35] us a heart for the people.
[00:02:38] To give us a heart for their condition, their situation to genuinely care about their,
[00:02:44] care about them.
[00:02:45] I think about me and Maya in the Old Testament.
[00:02:47] And if you remember me, Maya, he got word that the people in Jerusalem were in a really
[00:02:52] bad situation that the walls were down and that even though the church was already built,
[00:02:57] there were no walls around Jerusalem.
[00:02:59] They were hopeless.
[00:03:00] They were desolate.
[00:03:01] They were constantly being attacked and me and Maya cared.
[00:03:05] He cared about the condition and before he did a great work, it started with him weeping
[00:03:11] over the condition of the people.
[00:03:13] Before he ever sought to do something before he ever sought to be part of the solution,
[00:03:19] he wept over the condition of the people and then he confessed his own need.
[00:03:23] He confessed how he was a part of the problem.
[00:03:26] He confessed his own sin and asked God that he might be a salute, a part of the solution.
[00:03:32] He knew that the work needed to start in him first.
[00:03:36] The work always needs to start in our hearts first.
[00:03:40] Well, God equipped it.
[00:03:42] Nia Maya to do the work that he had called him to do.
[00:03:46] So God always does the equipping.
[00:03:48] God always does the equipping.
[00:03:50] He will equipe you to do the thing that he places in your heart.
[00:03:54] If God has placed a desire for you to teach the word,
[00:03:58] don't look to yourself to be equipped.
[00:04:00] If God puts you, get put that will in your heart.
[00:04:03] He's also going to give you the equipping.
[00:04:06] And so don't be afraid of being able to teach and doing that thing that God placed.
[00:04:11] You're going to do the thing that God is going to do.
[00:04:14] And so don't be afraid of being able to teach and doing that thing.
[00:04:15] But again, it all started with a real understanding of the condition of the people and a sincere desire to do something about it.
[00:04:23] Revelation's three, 15 through 18 says this,
[00:04:28] I know your works.
[00:04:30] They you are neither cold nor hot.
[00:04:33] I wish you could, you were cold or hot,
[00:04:36] so that because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot,
[00:04:39] I will vomit you out of my mouth.
[00:04:42] Because you say, I am rich, have become wealthy
[00:04:46] and have need of nothing.
[00:04:49] And do not know that you are rich, it miserable, poor, blind,
[00:04:54] and naked.
[00:04:55] I counsel you to buy me gold, buy for me gold,
[00:05:00] refined by fire that you may be rich.
[00:05:02] And why garments that you may be clothed,
[00:05:05] that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed.
[00:05:09] And anoint your eyes with eye-south that you may see.
[00:05:13] Why do I read that scripture?
[00:05:14] Because the people in your churches,
[00:05:17] the people you will be teaching don't always understand their condition.
[00:05:21] They might see themselves and they say,
[00:05:23] I have no need for nothing.
[00:05:25] I have no need for anything.
[00:05:25] When I was 16, actually 17,
[00:05:27] and somebody shared the gospel with me,
[00:05:30] I had my son, I was living with my boyfriend.
[00:05:34] And when he shared the gospel with me,
[00:05:37] I really believed that what he had,
[00:05:39] I didn't need.
[00:05:40] I told him, I don't need it, I'm good.
[00:05:43] Like I'm religious, I was raised Catholic.
[00:05:46] I've done x, y and z, like what you're selling,
[00:05:49] I don't need.
[00:05:50] I really believe that I had no need of anything.
[00:05:53] And yet Jesus, God will tell me
[00:05:56] that I was wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked.
[00:06:00] And that everything I needed was in Jesus.
[00:06:02] And thank God that somebody was willing to share that gospel.
[00:06:06] So even though they might not see their real condition,
[00:06:09] you and I need to see the condition of the people.
[00:06:12] We need to see the condition of the heart.
[00:06:14] If we are ever going to be able to speak to that condition.
[00:06:17] So yes, we need to understand how desperate their condition is.
[00:06:22] But even more importantly,
[00:06:23] we must understand how powerful the word of God is.
[00:06:27] Which leads me to my first point,
[00:06:29] the power and importance of the word of God.
[00:06:34] First Corinthians 2, 1 through 5 says,
[00:06:36] and I brethren, when I came to you,
[00:06:39] did not come with excellence of speech.
[00:06:43] Or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God,
[00:06:47] for I determine not to know anything among you,
[00:06:51] except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
[00:06:54] I was with you and weakness in fear and in much trembling,
[00:06:58] and my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words
[00:07:03] of human wisdom but in demonstration of the spirit and power
[00:07:08] that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men
[00:07:12] but in the power of God.
[00:07:15] Paul decided that he was not going to come
[00:07:19] in the intellect, in the intellect of men with excellence of speech
[00:07:24] or human wisdom.
[00:07:26] And let me tell you for you guys who are reading
[00:07:27] who are wanting to teach the Bible for me being up here.
[00:07:31] That means that there's no pressure for me to come up here
[00:07:36] and to try to impress you.
[00:07:39] There's no pressure for me to come up here and try to entertain you.
[00:07:43] I don't have to do that.
[00:07:45] The power of God is powerful enough to open up eyes.
[00:07:50] It's powerful enough to change hearts.
[00:07:53] It's powerful enough to direct lives.
[00:07:55] I don't have that pressure put in me.
[00:07:57] You don't have that pressure so when you're getting ready
[00:08:00] to teach the word of God whether you're being a children or to women
[00:08:03] wherever it is that you're teaching the word of God.
[00:08:06] That pressure is not on you to manufacture something.
[00:08:09] You just simply give it out.
[00:08:12] The power is in the word of God and in the Holy Spirit
[00:08:16] who confirms that in the hearts of the listeners.
[00:08:20] So again you and I don't have to manufacture or create the message
[00:08:24] we just need to distribute it.
[00:08:27] Genesis to Revelation is all we will ever need
[00:08:31] to meet the need of our listeners.
[00:08:34] It doesn't matter where they are, what walk they're walking right now.
[00:08:38] Everything we're ever going to need.
[00:08:41] You're going to find in Genesis to Revelation.
[00:08:44] So we don't need clever phrases or jokes.
[00:08:47] It's not bad to include those things.
[00:08:51] It's okay if you have maybe a phrase or if you have a joke
[00:08:55] that can align with your message and make it a little lighthearted.
[00:08:59] I personally am not that kind of teacher preacher.
[00:09:03] I'm not that.
[00:09:04] I've accepted that there was a time when I first started teaching
[00:09:07] that I would teach at conferences and there was like the funny girl.
[00:09:11] There was this person in that person and I was like, oh Lord, I want to be them.
[00:09:16] Why don't I get to be the funny girl?
[00:09:18] Why don't I have to be with a heavy message?
[00:09:21] With the exhortation, with the light rebuk.
[00:09:24] You know it's like I and I just accepted that that was not for me.
[00:09:28] And I remember talking to a senior pastor's wife
[00:09:31] and sharing with her that I struggled with the calling
[00:09:35] that God had placed on my life versus other teachers of the Bible.
[00:09:39] And she said to me, you know Sonia, if you were having a surgery
[00:09:45] and the surgeon walked in, would you want him to tell you a joke
[00:09:49] or would you want him to just get on with it?
[00:09:52] He's like, you know we're here to perform spiritual surgery, get on with it.
[00:09:57] And so sometimes it is okay to tell a joke or to have, you know,
[00:10:01] clever saying or stories that really just kind of come alongside your message.
[00:10:05] That's okay, but just no you don't need it.
[00:10:08] You don't need it.
[00:10:09] If it fits great, but you don't need it, there isn't some kind of formula
[00:10:13] that you and I have to, you know, create when putting our notes
[00:10:17] to prepare a message.
[00:10:19] We don't need formula.
[00:10:21] We just need scripture, amen.
[00:10:24] So we don't need motivational rhetoric either.
[00:10:27] You cannot look at somebody or look into a crowd and tell them,
[00:10:30] just try a little harder.
[00:10:32] You know, you can do it if you just, you know, do these three steps.
[00:10:35] That doesn't work.
[00:10:37] It doesn't work because they do not have any of themselves what they need
[00:10:43] to change the power is in the scripture and in the Holy Spirit.
[00:10:48] So if for us to when we're teaching, to just give them motivational, you know,
[00:10:53] to sayings and teaching, they sound great at the moment,
[00:10:56] but when they get back to their reality, it's not going to help.
[00:11:00] It's not going to help them in the real life, hard situations.
[00:11:04] When there has been, has been unfaithful.
[00:11:06] When there's been a death in their home.
[00:11:08] When they're struggling with addiction.
[00:11:10] When there's financial loss, depression, hopelessness.
[00:11:13] I guarantee you that jokes and motivational speeches are not going to carry water.
[00:11:18] They are just not going to make it in the world that we are living in today.
[00:11:23] And so, you know, when you and I really believe that the power is in the message
[00:11:29] and not in the messenger, it takes a lot of pressure off of us.
[00:11:34] Can you imagine the kind of pressure that you would place yourself in?
[00:11:38] If you believe that you somehow had to create or come up with something,
[00:11:45] make something happen in a classroom at a conference room at a retreat
[00:11:48] with 10 or 30 kids or maybe 100 or 1,000 women or maybe just one broken woman
[00:11:56] that you're speaking to.
[00:11:57] If you thought that the power was in the messenger and not the message,
[00:12:03] can you imagine the pressure for you to say the right thing?
[00:12:06] For you to get this person and pull them out of the hole that they're in,
[00:12:10] you and I cannot do that.
[00:12:11] And we don't have to praise God that the power is in the message.
[00:12:17] I'm ministering a very difficult area of South Los Angeles.
[00:12:20] We are right borderline with Watts, Compton.
[00:12:23] And so we've been there, like I said for 20 years.
[00:12:27] And at any of my women's Bible studies,
[00:12:30] our my women's conferences and my women's retreats,
[00:12:32] I could be looking into the face of mathematics.
[00:12:37] Gang members, hardened individuals, broken hearts, hopeless lives.
[00:12:41] This is our data.
[00:12:43] This is our ministry.
[00:12:44] This is what my husband and I were brought out of.
[00:12:47] My husband and I met in gangs.
[00:12:49] We were in a not-of-dubinow halls.
[00:12:50] Luckily we got saved and the Lord took us right back.
[00:12:55] And this is what we minister to.
[00:12:57] I don't want to look into those faces and think that I have to somehow come up with something.
[00:13:02] I have nothing, but thank God that his word can change lives
[00:13:08] and that his word is all that I will ever need.
[00:13:11] So I have seen how I can share one message into one crowd
[00:13:15] and one event and that one message can change multiple ladies,
[00:13:20] multiple lives, various situations.
[00:13:23] So again I am thankful to deliver it just as it was revealed to me.
[00:13:28] Just as the Lord impressed it in my heart,
[00:13:30] I go up there and whether I like it or not, I deliver it.
[00:13:34] That is my job.
[00:13:35] That is your job as a teacher of the word to spend that time with Jesus.
[00:13:41] To know that you heard him say, to share the thing you are about to get up there and say,
[00:13:47] and then say it.
[00:13:49] Just say it.
[00:13:50] I am faithful to deliver it as the Lord revealed it to me.
[00:13:54] Again whether I like the message that God placed in my heart or not,
[00:13:57] I don't get to rewrite it.
[00:13:59] I pray, I listen, I write it down, I deliver it.
[00:14:04] That is my part and the Holy Spirit gets to do the rest.
[00:14:07] The Holy Spirit gets to do the rest.
[00:14:10] The Holy Spirit will confirm what part of that message was for who?
[00:14:15] He gets to do that.
[00:14:17] I just deliver it in its entirety.
[00:14:19] So Paul had found himself in various situations with people of,
[00:14:23] in the people with Corinth.
[00:14:26] He said, I was with you in weakness and fear and in much trembling.
[00:14:29] And in every situation Paul chose to speak and preach the word to God in a simple way.
[00:14:36] And allow the people to see that the power was in the Spirit, not in him.
[00:14:41] He says in verse 4,
[00:14:42] and my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom,
[00:14:47] but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.
[00:14:50] So he says that the demonstration was of the Spirit's power.
[00:14:54] When the word of God goes out simply,
[00:14:57] the power of the Spirit of God is felt powerfully.
[00:15:01] We don't have to use big words.
[00:15:03] If I use big words where I'm ministering, I will lose most of my crowd.
[00:15:09] You have to know your audience and you have to keep it simple,
[00:15:13] because there's no point in somebody coming up and sounding amazing,
[00:15:17] but you lost everybody in the room.
[00:15:19] And so when it goes out simply,
[00:15:22] it's heard powerfully and then it allows the Lord to do what He needs to do.
[00:15:27] So he says again that it was felt powerfully.
[00:15:32] The Spirit knows things that no one should know,
[00:15:36] and accomplishes things that no one else can accomplish.
[00:15:38] He brews 412 through 13 says,
[00:15:41] for the word of God is living and powerful
[00:15:45] and sharper than any two-edged sword.
[00:15:49] Peer seeing even to the division of soul and spirit of joint and marrow
[00:15:54] and is a discerner of thoughts and intense of the heart.
[00:16:00] And there is no creature hidden from His sight,
[00:16:03] but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give and account.
[00:16:11] That is powerful.
[00:16:13] That is powerful.
[00:16:14] When you and I teach God's word,
[00:16:16] it speaks directly to everyone in the room.
[00:16:19] It goes down to a place that you and I could never go to.
[00:16:23] It says it goes down to the very division.
[00:16:25] Can you imagine the limited space between joint and marrow?
[00:16:30] Can you imagine the limited space between soul and spirit?
[00:16:34] But that the Bible says that the word of God when it goes out,
[00:16:37] can go to the deepest part of the human soul,
[00:16:40] can meet a person, can point out their motives,
[00:16:42] can point out why they're there and what they're thinking
[00:16:45] and what they're about to do.
[00:16:47] I can't do that.
[00:16:48] I can't know that.
[00:16:49] But the Bible says that His word is living and it is powerful
[00:16:53] and it is sharp and it does the cutting that it needs to do in the human heart.
[00:16:59] So because it is so powerful when you and I teach God's word,
[00:17:03] it speaks to everyone in the room.
[00:17:07] It meets them exactly where they are
[00:17:09] and then it invites them to not stay there.
[00:17:12] It says, I know that's where you are and I'm going to meet you there,
[00:17:16] but I'm not going to leave you there.
[00:17:17] I'm going to invite you there and invite it to come up higher,
[00:17:20] do something different.
[00:17:21] Every scripture giving them a new option.
[00:17:25] Then the way they were maybe taught in the streets,
[00:17:27] the way they were maybe taught in their homes,
[00:17:29] maybe tradition, religion, every scripture
[00:17:32] invites them to do things a little differently.
[00:17:35] We can't do that.
[00:17:36] The word of God does that.
[00:17:39] He says that your faith should not be in the wisdom
[00:17:42] of man but in the power of God,
[00:17:44] Paul wanted the believers in Corinth to place their faith
[00:17:48] and be dependent on God, not on men.
[00:17:51] Listen, Paul was limited in how much he could do
[00:17:54] and how long he could stay with them.
[00:17:58] Paul had these missionary trips.
[00:18:00] He founded churches and then he circled back around
[00:18:02] to check on their health,
[00:18:04] but Paul knew that one day he couldn't be there.
[00:18:07] He was limited to what he could do for them
[00:18:09] and how long he could stay with them.
[00:18:12] Our church in South LA is always at risk of not being there
[00:18:16] for one month to another.
[00:18:17] It's a very low income community,
[00:18:20] so even with the most faithful of attendance,
[00:18:22] you might not make your rent for one month to another.
[00:18:25] And we do ministry there like this might be our last month,
[00:18:29] every month, even though we've been there for 20 years.
[00:18:32] And I look at my women's ministry leaders
[00:18:33] and I tell them, you need to do ministry like
[00:18:36] you might not be here tomorrow, so that when we are not,
[00:18:39] we've given them enough of Jesus
[00:18:40] that they're gonna be okay.
[00:18:43] That even when we're not there,
[00:18:44] Jesus is there they know where to go to
[00:18:47] when these doors are closed and they cannot come to us anymore.
[00:18:50] We need to give them Jesus because I'm limited.
[00:18:53] I don't know how long our call is gonna be there in LA.
[00:18:58] So we give them the word of God.
[00:19:01] We are limited but God is so unlimited.
[00:19:04] If we give them Jesus,
[00:19:06] if we teach them to go to God's Word first by verse book by book,
[00:19:10] we know they will be fine long after
[00:19:13] we are no longer there.
[00:19:15] Well then we want to talk about the purpose of reading
[00:19:17] of giving them and teaching them the word of God.
[00:19:21] Second Timothy 3, verses 13 through 17,
[00:19:26] says, but evil men and imposter will grow worse and worse.
[00:19:31] The seabying and being deceived,
[00:19:35] but you must continue in the things
[00:19:38] which you have learned and been assured of.
[00:19:42] Knowing from whom you have learned them
[00:19:44] and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures,
[00:19:49] which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith,
[00:19:54] which is in Christ Jesus.
[00:19:56] All Scripture is given by inspiration of God
[00:20:00] and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
[00:20:03] for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
[00:20:07] that the man of God may be complete or mature,
[00:20:11] thoroughly equipped for every good work.
[00:20:14] So here it says, you must continue.
[00:20:17] Paul was talking to Timothy, Paul knew that he was coming
[00:20:21] to the end of his life and he says,
[00:20:23] to Timothy Timothy, they are about to kill me
[00:20:27] and I need you to continue to do the work until they kill you.
[00:20:32] Until they kill you, like they're about to do to me,
[00:20:35] I need you to continue in the Word of God.
[00:20:37] I need you to stay in this.
[00:20:39] I know other people are trying new things
[00:20:41] and I know that other people may be our leaning towards fables
[00:20:44] or leaning towards religion
[00:20:45] or going back to the customs of their father,
[00:20:48] but you Timothy must continue.
[00:20:51] Like Timothy we are being charged to day challenged
[00:20:55] to continue in the truth of God's Word,
[00:20:58] and not be let astray.
[00:21:00] We must not be deceived into thinking
[00:21:02] that there is something better or more advanced out there.
[00:21:08] There are many Christians today who call themselves progressives
[00:21:11] and supposing that somehow they are progressing
[00:21:16] and that somehow they know more today they got new then.
[00:21:20] I want you to think about that,
[00:21:22] that there would be somebody today who says,
[00:21:25] I have progress.
[00:21:26] I have been enlightened.
[00:21:27] I know so much more that somehow I know more now
[00:21:31] than God knew then when he had these people inspired
[00:21:36] write this down.
[00:21:37] And yet we know about these progressives
[00:21:39] and we hear about them
[00:21:41] and they say that they are becoming enlightened.
[00:21:44] They are evolving
[00:21:45] and that that makes them more tolerant.
[00:21:47] That makes them more liberal.
[00:21:49] Well God remains the same yesterday
[00:21:51] today and forever more.
[00:21:54] And I hope that I never outgrow God.
[00:21:59] They think they are growing.
[00:22:00] They think their eyes are being enlightened.
[00:22:02] I don't ever want to outgrow the Word of God.
[00:22:06] I don't ever want to get too smart for my own good.
[00:22:11] That I would be what the Bible says professing
[00:22:13] to be wise and yet becoming fools.
[00:22:17] He says Paul says in verse 16
[00:22:19] that all scripture is given by inspiration of God.
[00:22:22] You and I again don't get to choose which inspired verse
[00:22:26] stays in and which inspired verse goes out.
[00:22:30] We don't get to choose which inspired verse we teach on
[00:22:33] and which inspired verse we avoid.
[00:22:36] Which inspired verses are relevant
[00:22:38] and which inspired verses are outdated.
[00:22:42] They are all inspired by God
[00:22:44] and we have not been given any of us the liberty to pick
[00:22:50] and choose each inspired verse has a purpose
[00:22:54] and a usefulness and is profitable for the work
[00:22:58] that God intends to do both in my heart, in my life
[00:23:02] and in my listeners.
[00:23:08] I may not like it particular verse at the time
[00:23:10] when I first became a Christian there was a lot of verses I didn't like
[00:23:13] and that I didn't like that were being quoted to me
[00:23:17] but thank God for their faithfulness.
[00:23:20] When I got saved I was already living with my boyfriend
[00:23:22] I already had a son by him
[00:23:24] and I started to go to Calvary Chapel Chino Valley
[00:23:27] and I got saved nobody talked to me or touched the issue
[00:23:30] about the fact that I was living with somebody
[00:23:32] but one maybe six months into having gone saved
[00:23:36] I went to church and I heard a message about
[00:23:37] how the Lord designed marriage
[00:23:39] and he didn't want people living together
[00:23:41] and I remember just turning around and telling my husband
[00:23:44] oh my God that's us!
[00:23:48] We got to go talk to the pastor
[00:23:50] and we got to get this right
[00:23:53] thank God that he was saying those things from the pulpit
[00:23:58] and then the guy who shared the took me to church
[00:24:01] and shared the gospel with me, I used to cuss a lot
[00:24:03] and I didn't hear that I cussed
[00:24:06] and I finished every sentence with a cuss word
[00:24:09] and he's like, you know again, months into my salvation
[00:24:12] he said, man girl you can cuss
[00:24:15] and I was like what I do?
[00:24:19] and I was like you know what?
[00:24:20] and he shared the gospel.
[00:24:21] He shared the verse with me that said
[00:24:23] that no one wholly unworthy
[00:24:26] words should come out of your mouth
[00:24:27] and so I said you know what?
[00:24:29] I'm gonna slow down.
[00:24:31] I'm gonna be intentional about hearing the things
[00:24:33] that I'm saying and thank God that he was
[00:24:35] able to deliver that word.
[00:24:38] You and I, we might not like the verses
[00:24:41] but thank God that people are still faithful to deliver them
[00:24:44] and you and I as teachers of the word
[00:24:46] it's hard to be the one to come up
[00:24:48] and say the hard thing sometime
[00:24:50] but I guarantee if that person
[00:24:52] obeys that scripture one day they will thank you
[00:24:56] for having been faithful to deliver that word of God.
[00:25:01] The same is true again for the people we are teaching
[00:25:03] they might not like the word they might not like us
[00:25:07] but if they receive the word of God and submit to it
[00:25:09] they will be changed
[00:25:10] and there will be eternally grateful
[00:25:12] and they will learn to love it.
[00:25:15] It's like broccoli they hate it at first
[00:25:18] but then they will learn to love it
[00:25:20] they will learn to love it because it's gonna be
[00:25:23] health to their bones.
[00:25:25] Verse 16 says profitable for doctrine
[00:25:27] for reproof or correction
[00:25:29] for instruction and righteous and so the first thing
[00:25:31] that we are teaching is doctrine
[00:25:32] doctrine is made up.
[00:25:34] Doctrine is created from everything
[00:25:37] that the Bible has to say about a particular subject
[00:25:40] so that is what the word doctrine means
[00:25:42] it is made up of everything from Genesis
[00:25:44] to revelation on any particular topic
[00:25:48] say for instance, the doctrine of the Trinity
[00:25:50] it's everything from Genesis to Revelation
[00:25:53] that the Bible says about it
[00:25:54] that would be the doctrine of the Trinity
[00:25:56] it is important for us to study
[00:25:59] and teach people what it is
[00:26:01] that the Bible teaches on the
[00:26:04] particular topics that we have been assigned
[00:26:06] or covering.
[00:26:07] So sometimes you go to a conference
[00:26:08] and they give you a topic
[00:26:09] you know it's really important
[00:26:11] that we know what the Bible says
[00:26:14] because I don't know
[00:26:15] sometimes they'll just give you like one little verse
[00:26:17] you know like because it looks pretty
[00:26:19] on the decorations you know
[00:26:21] and then they task you with creating an entire
[00:26:23] weekend full of studies
[00:26:24] and you're like you know
[00:26:25] you have to make sure you know
[00:26:28] the doctrine, the doctrine
[00:26:30] and the only way you understand that
[00:26:33] is by knowing what the entire Bible says
[00:26:36] on a particular subject
[00:26:37] we need to teach what the Bible says
[00:26:40] so that they could have an understanding
[00:26:42] of God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit,
[00:26:45] man, sin, the plan of redemption
[00:26:47] the work of the Holy Spirit
[00:26:49] the hope of a heavenly future
[00:26:52] doctrine is important
[00:26:54] it is important
[00:26:56] I know women sometimes like light
[00:26:58] and fluffy messages
[00:27:00] I know that and we get tempted to do that
[00:27:02] at women's teas
[00:27:04] and women's lunches but it's so important
[00:27:06] that we teach the Bible
[00:27:08] and that we teach doctrine
[00:27:10] that we tell them the media things
[00:27:13] yes they start as babes
[00:27:15] but at some point it's okay to expect
[00:27:17] that they would want the more media
[00:27:20] or studies
[00:27:20] and so we must teach them doctrine
[00:27:24] we don't teach tradition
[00:27:25] we don't teach religion
[00:27:26] or personal experience
[00:27:28] we never elevate those things
[00:27:30] to the level of Bible
[00:27:33] sometimes my family tradition
[00:27:34] my line up with Bible
[00:27:36] sometimes my experience
[00:27:38] my line up with what I'm about to teach
[00:27:40] but it never gets elevated
[00:27:42] to the level of doctrine
[00:27:44] and to the level of Bible
[00:27:46] it's just what it is
[00:27:47] tradition religion
[00:27:49] personal experience
[00:27:50] nothing compares to doctrine
[00:27:52] and doctrine is to be made up
[00:27:54] of what the Bible says
[00:27:56] not my personal experience
[00:27:59] we have to continue
[00:28:00] in the things which you have learned
[00:28:02] he says when teaching doctrine
[00:28:05] so that if anyone else's tradition
[00:28:07] experiences, feelings, personal relationships
[00:28:10] cause them to have a belief system
[00:28:13] if they have a doctrine that is faulty
[00:28:15] guess what?
[00:28:16] when you're teaching it
[00:28:17] you're going to correct their bad doctrine
[00:28:20] I came out of Catholicism
[00:28:22] I had a lot of bad doctrine in me
[00:28:24] and little by little
[00:28:26] good doctrine
[00:28:27] was washing my brain
[00:28:29] was washing my way of thinking
[00:28:31] was getting rid of those things
[00:28:33] that were not even necessary
[00:28:34] and so good doctrine is very important
[00:28:38] he also says that
[00:28:40] scripture brings reproof
[00:28:41] it brings a scolding a rebuk
[00:28:44] we teach the Bible so that it can
[00:28:47] reproof us
[00:28:48] scold us
[00:28:50] when we go astray
[00:28:52] like any good parent
[00:28:54] God scolds us
[00:28:55] when we deliberately disobey
[00:28:57] and I say us
[00:28:59] because the work always starts with us
[00:29:01] every time I'm going to teach
[00:29:03] any portion of the Bible
[00:29:05] it always works in my heart first
[00:29:08] before it's ever going to go out
[00:29:09] to anybody else
[00:29:10] the Lord does this
[00:29:12] and I say we are going to be
[00:29:12] rebuking this
[00:29:13] reproofing this work in my heart first
[00:29:16] and then he says
[00:29:17] correction
[00:29:18] the act of correcting opinions
[00:29:20] or manners
[00:29:21] the act of bringing back from air
[00:29:24] or deviation
[00:29:24] to adjust and a true
[00:29:27] standard
[00:29:27] that's what the Bible does
[00:29:29] it corrects opinions
[00:29:31] because there's so many opinions
[00:29:33] out there
[00:29:34] but not all of them line up with the word
[00:29:36] of God
[00:29:36] and so when you and I teach
[00:29:37] good Bible teachings
[00:29:40] it is correcting
[00:29:41] it is reproving
[00:29:43] and it is forming good doctrine
[00:29:45] he says instruction
[00:29:47] the Bible instructs us what to do
[00:29:49] and what not to do
[00:29:50] to help us not to go the wrong way
[00:29:52] so that we don't have to be rebuking
[00:29:54] it shows us how to do it
[00:29:55] right the first time
[00:29:57] many things can be avoided
[00:29:59] with proper instructions
[00:30:00] can you imagine the amount of regret
[00:30:03] that you can spare people
[00:30:05] if you just taught the Bible
[00:30:07] that you would spare a lot of girls
[00:30:10] from a lot of bad choices
[00:30:12] and a lot of mistakes
[00:30:13] that they're making at a young age
[00:30:15] or even people who are more mature
[00:30:17] that if you just shared the word of God
[00:30:19] you can spare them from so much
[00:30:20] by just bringing instruction
[00:30:22] on how to do things right
[00:30:24] not to date that guy
[00:30:26] not to go to those places
[00:30:27] not to do those things
[00:30:28] not to say those things
[00:30:29] not to behave that way
[00:30:31] to be modest
[00:30:32] to do all these things
[00:30:33] that we just shared with the word of God
[00:30:35] said
[00:30:35] we could instruct people
[00:30:37] and they could avoid so many bad decisions
[00:30:40] the Bible instructs us in the right way to live
[00:30:44] so that our lives might be pleasing to God
[00:30:47] and that we might live in fellowship
[00:30:49] with him and one another
[00:30:51] and in verse 17 he said
[00:30:53] that the man of God may be complete
[00:30:55] thoroughly equipped for every good work
[00:30:58] listen it is important
[00:31:00] that the word of God go out
[00:31:02] in its entirety
[00:31:02] so that it can do the work that it was intended to do
[00:31:06] again the purpose is that we may be complete
[00:31:09] God's desire is that we may be complete
[00:31:12] or spiritually mature
[00:31:14] I think about the things I was doing
[00:31:16] when I was a new Christian
[00:31:18] thank God I'm not doing those things
[00:31:20] they thought that I am complete
[00:31:22] that I'm spiritually mature
[00:31:23] that I'm working out my salvation
[00:31:25] that I'll become more and more like Christ every day
[00:31:28] every time I open up my word
[00:31:30] every time I'm under the teaching of my husband
[00:31:32] every time the word is going out
[00:31:34] I'm me more and more into the image of God
[00:31:37] I am becoming more mature
[00:31:38] and you know why that is good
[00:31:40] because then I turn around
[00:31:41] and I do something with it
[00:31:43] it says, it equips you
[00:31:45] thoroughly equips you
[00:31:48] not just with your hand but with your heart
[00:31:50] so you could do a good work
[00:31:52] he says that you will be thoroughly furnished
[00:31:55] for what?
[00:31:57] so that every believer will eventually become
[00:32:00] a worker
[00:32:01] you and I share the word we teach the word
[00:32:06] so that they can be
[00:32:07] you know maturing off and strong enough
[00:32:10] and equipping up to one day
[00:32:12] do something for the Lord
[00:32:14] you know when we first became Christian
[00:32:15] we just took in and we took in
[00:32:17] and maybe we took our kids to the children's ministry
[00:32:20] and never even thought about taking care of somebody else's kid
[00:32:23] but we were just taking and taking
[00:32:26] and taking and then one day it registered
[00:32:28] in your mind and your heart
[00:32:30] that you're gifted to your equipped to do a good work
[00:32:32] that now it's time for you to do something for someone
[00:32:35] and if it's the word of God does that
[00:32:38] it makes us mature and makes us complete
[00:32:40] so that we could be thoroughly equipped
[00:32:44] that is what well fed
[00:32:46] spiritually mature Christians do they serve
[00:32:49] and that should be our goal
[00:32:51] to get people saved
[00:32:53] to get people strong enough
[00:32:55] to that would they turn around and do something for the Lord themselves
[00:32:57] because there's only so much you can experience
[00:33:01] God in when you're just learning about him
[00:33:04] there is a whole another level of growth
[00:33:06] that can only come through service
[00:33:09] and so if you don't ever encourage people
[00:33:12] to get to the point where they're from learning
[00:33:14] to serving, you're dwarfing them
[00:33:16] God never saved anybody to just come and sit in our pews
[00:33:20] we should be looking for opportunities to grow them
[00:33:24] and then give them opportunities to serve
[00:33:27] to be able to learn and know God in that way
[00:33:30] I would have never known God the way I know God today
[00:33:33] if I hadn't one day pushed past the fear
[00:33:36] and said yes to God's calling for me to teach women
[00:33:39] I hid in children's ministry for years
[00:33:42] maybe 10, 15 years in children's ministry
[00:33:45] because I was so scared of teaching women
[00:33:48] but when I finally said yes to God
[00:33:51] and to what God was asking me to do
[00:33:53] I know God in a way I couldn't have known him any other way
[00:33:58] and so there's a way that you and I get to know him
[00:34:00] when we serve him and we want other people to know that
[00:34:03] and so we give them the words
[00:34:05] so that the word can prompt that in them
[00:34:07] that they too might have a moment
[00:34:09] and an opportunity where they do a good work
[00:34:12] so let's talk a little bit about the method
[00:34:15] so method if you have been asked
[00:34:17] to share a Bible study maybe it's children's ministry
[00:34:21] you know I tell people like someone asked me
[00:34:24] they said I really want to do what you're doing
[00:34:26] and I said everything I learned to do
[00:34:28] out here with women
[00:34:29] I learned to do in my home with my children first
[00:34:32] so it could even just be teaching a devote in your living room
[00:34:37] if you are tasked
[00:34:39] if you are going to communicate the word of God
[00:34:42] it always starts with prayer
[00:34:45] We pray as many days before our study as possible
[00:34:49] ask God to help you to understand
[00:34:52] you know when I know I'm going to be teaching somewhere
[00:34:56] I get in prayer again if I can pray a month out
[00:35:00] I'm praying a month out
[00:35:01] I put it right down my prayer list
[00:35:04] and so I'm praying over it
[00:35:06] I ask God to give me insight to the word of God that I've been assigned
[00:35:09] Lord help me understand it
[00:35:13] what was going on
[00:35:15] you know what were you trying to do there
[00:35:17] I want to understand what was going on in the word
[00:35:21] and then I want to understand what's going on in the hearts
[00:35:24] and the lives of the people
[00:35:25] I'm going to be preaching to or teaching to
[00:35:28] I tell myself so you will never have this combination of women
[00:35:32] and this room you will never have them again
[00:35:34] The odds of this same women being in a room with me again
[00:35:38] I will never have that opportunity again
[00:35:41] so I tell God I don't want to miss out on this opportunity
[00:35:44] you know who's going to be in the room I don't
[00:35:47] give me an insight to who the listener is
[00:35:50] who is my audience
[00:35:53] so I ask what is your word teaching
[00:35:55] help me to understand it
[00:35:56] what is my audience going through
[00:35:59] and then I ask God to give me a special word or a message
[00:36:03] for that situation, for the trials, for the seasons
[00:36:06] that those ladies are going in
[00:36:09] I don't know those things but God does
[00:36:11] and so when I'm reading the Scriptures
[00:36:13] and I'm looking for those applications
[00:36:15] and the Lord takes my mind to a particular place
[00:36:18] or a different you know application
[00:36:20] I have to believe that someone in the room need it that
[00:36:24] and so I allow the Lord to guide me that way
[00:36:26] I don't suppose that I already know where I want to go with the study
[00:36:29] I let the Lord lead
[00:36:31] and so you and I have to always start with prayer
[00:36:35] because he knows the heart of the women
[00:36:38] he will give you the right heart
[00:36:40] and he will give you the right words
[00:36:42] and then I read and I study
[00:36:44] and so that's really, really important
[00:36:46] that you read and you study
[00:36:48] you cannot give to somebody something you don't have
[00:36:51] if you don't understand what you're reading
[00:36:55] you're going to have a really hard time communicating
[00:36:57] that and again it doesn't matter what age group you're teaching
[00:37:01] because I taught again I was in children's ministry
[00:37:03] I loved teaching the children
[00:37:05] I never assumed I was there doing daycare
[00:37:07] I taught them the Bible
[00:37:08] they got full Bible studies like
[00:37:10] you know the women that my church do
[00:37:12] because I wanted to give them the Bible
[00:37:15] but I needed to understand it
[00:37:16] so I did a show up on a Sunday with like the notes
[00:37:18] that they gave me at Children's Ministry
[00:37:20] like just reading it for the first time
[00:37:22] no I needed to understand it long before
[00:37:26] I got behind that pulpit
[00:37:28] and so you and I we need to read it
[00:37:30] we need to study it
[00:37:31] we need to read the verses before
[00:37:33] we need to read the verses after
[00:37:35] the portion of Scripture that they've given us
[00:37:38] I remember reading the entire book of I say it once
[00:37:42] even though I was assigned one verse
[00:37:44] so this is the verse
[00:37:45] I'm sure maybe if you guys have covered it in a retreat
[00:37:48] Isaiah 43 19 says behold
[00:37:50] I do a new thing
[00:37:52] now it's shall spring forth
[00:37:54] shall you not know it
[00:37:55] I will even make a road
[00:37:57] in the wilderness
[00:37:58] and rivers in the desert
[00:38:00] and it sounds like so beautiful
[00:38:02] like the Lord is going to do a new thing
[00:38:05] and so the leaders of the retreat
[00:38:08] thought this is a great verse
[00:38:10] but for me I was teaching the entire retreat
[00:38:13] I read all of the book of Isaiah
[00:38:15] and it's like judgment upon judgment upon judgment
[00:38:19] children of Israel
[00:38:21] you know would rebel
[00:38:22] and he would allow somebody to conquer them
[00:38:24] and then they'd get freed up
[00:38:26] and then they'd happen all over again
[00:38:28] and he kept telling you know he's like yeah
[00:38:29] now he's getting to the point
[00:38:31] where he's going to do a new thing
[00:38:32] but how long before the cycle repeated
[00:38:35] and he'd have to repent and rebuke
[00:38:37] and so in order for me to do the passage
[00:38:41] justice
[00:38:42] you have to read it
[00:38:44] understand what was happening
[00:38:45] and teach on that as well
[00:38:48] I don't know that the retreat
[00:38:50] leaders expected that I was
[00:38:52] you know going to start with the judgment
[00:38:54] but like you have to be
[00:38:56] you gotta know the word
[00:38:58] it's not good enough
[00:38:59] sometimes you know as scriptures
[00:39:01] taken out of context
[00:39:03] because the retreat wants to say something with it
[00:39:06] but the Word of God is not saying that
[00:39:09] and so we need to be careful
[00:39:10] that we understand it
[00:39:11] and they were teaching it
[00:39:12] and we're not making scriptures say something
[00:39:14] we wanted to say
[00:39:15] but that it gets to say what it was intended to say
[00:39:18] so we need to allow it
[00:39:20] to impact us first
[00:39:21] many times as you are reading the scriptures
[00:39:24] and considering their application
[00:39:26] you might get encouraged or maybe rebuke
[00:39:29] by yourself before
[00:39:31] you give it to anybody else
[00:39:33] listen, allow them to move you
[00:39:35] to impact you to minister to you
[00:39:38] and when you do you will have a greater
[00:39:40] understanding
[00:39:41] because you will have experience
[00:39:43] for yourself
[00:39:44] when it comes time to share
[00:39:47] you will do so
[00:39:48] with more authenticity
[00:39:50] and conviction
[00:39:52] I always feel like the Lord allows
[00:39:54] things to happen in my life
[00:39:56] right before I'm a teach on it
[00:39:59] I'm like man, Lord
[00:40:00] you really wanted me to understand
[00:40:02] that at that level
[00:40:04] I'm going to share about a Judaism
[00:40:05] and then I get a Judaism
[00:40:08] and it's like they betray me with a kiss
[00:40:10] and you're like man
[00:40:13] I get it Lord
[00:40:15] I get it
[00:40:16] I didn't see that
[00:40:17] the way I see it now
[00:40:18] and so sometimes the Lord
[00:40:20] will open up your eyes
[00:40:21] or allow you to experience
[00:40:23] before you share it with somebody else
[00:40:25] allow that to be real
[00:40:27] allow God to do it in you first
[00:40:28] impact you first
[00:40:30] let it hit you
[00:40:31] in the heart
[00:40:32] and between the eyes first
[00:40:34] before you do that
[00:40:36] because again
[00:40:37] it's going to be authentic
[00:40:38] and it's going to bring conviction
[00:40:39] organize your notes
[00:40:41] write your thoughts down
[00:40:44] or use your notes app
[00:40:45] and your cell phone
[00:40:46] and I do that a lot
[00:40:47] so like when I'm praying about an event
[00:40:49] I'm already asking God
[00:40:50] like man Lord
[00:40:51] what do you want me to say about that topic
[00:40:53] sometimes I'm driving
[00:40:54] sometimes I'm listening to a worship song
[00:40:56] and something just like really
[00:40:58] stands out
[00:40:59] and I think man that's what I'm going to be teaching about
[00:41:02] I don't suppose
[00:41:04] that I'm going to remember
[00:41:05] when I get down to reading my notes
[00:41:07] I mean to do my notes
[00:41:08] so I will use an app
[00:41:10] or I'll write it down
[00:41:11] so that I don't forget
[00:41:12] and then when I'm getting ready
[00:41:14] to actually put the notes together
[00:41:15] I bring all those little pieces of paper everywhere
[00:41:17] so that's just a little advice for you
[00:41:19] if the Lord is revealing
[00:41:20] things to you throughout the week
[00:41:22] throughout your time and preparation
[00:41:24] like write those things down
[00:41:26] don't forget those things
[00:41:27] so that you know that might be the Lord speaking to you
[00:41:29] and that just quite a time that you had in your car
[00:41:32] you know you want to remember those things
[00:41:34] when it comes down
[00:41:35] to writing down your notes
[00:41:38] when developing
[00:41:39] your study
[00:41:40] I don't know everybody has something different
[00:41:42] I don't know any of you guys
[00:41:44] remember the spider charts
[00:41:45] this is something I learned in elementary
[00:41:47] so it looks like the spider with legs
[00:41:51] and so in the middle I put my topic
[00:41:53] and then every leg is like a thought
[00:41:56] that's kind of growing the topic
[00:41:59] so it just kind of grows
[00:42:00] and so that's what I do to get it out of my head
[00:42:03] and on paper
[00:42:04] I don't know if that works for you
[00:42:06] but you know try to get your thoughts
[00:42:07] out of your thoughts
[00:42:09] and put them on paper
[00:42:10] and I suggest preparing some kind of written notes
[00:42:14] no matter what
[00:42:16] I don't recommend winging it ever
[00:42:18] like ever
[00:42:20] even if they're in no because I'm being serious
[00:42:21] because sometimes you say tell you
[00:42:23] oh you're only going to have like a five minute
[00:42:25] really quick five minute thing
[00:42:27] or maybe you're just sharing your testimony
[00:42:29] if you guys do mission
[00:42:30] sometimes in the mission field
[00:42:31] you got to do something really really short
[00:42:33] I don't suggest winging it ever
[00:42:36] because nerves are a real thing
[00:42:39] nerves are a real thing
[00:42:41] like you and I we could be talkers
[00:42:42] like you can go to cafe
[00:42:43] we could talk for five hours
[00:42:45] and never run out of things to say
[00:42:46] there's something that happens
[00:42:48] when you come up on the pulpit
[00:42:49] and it's spiritual
[00:42:51] and you need to be ready
[00:42:53] and so I don't recommend
[00:42:54] anybody ever teach without some kind of notes
[00:42:57] even if it's just really quick bullet points
[00:42:59] but I do believe that you need to organize your thoughts
[00:43:02] you need to organize your notes
[00:43:03] when you're going to teach
[00:43:04] and then I want to share your message
[00:43:07] think more about the audience
[00:43:09] the people that you do about yourself
[00:43:11] you know when I first started
[00:43:13] sharing teaching and women
[00:43:15] I would break out in hives
[00:43:17] or I would
[00:43:19] feel like I was going to pass out
[00:43:21] or throw up
[00:43:22] and I would
[00:43:23] just be embarrassed
[00:43:24] like oh I'm going to get up there
[00:43:26] I'm just going to make a fool out of myself
[00:43:27] and I just got to the point where I said
[00:43:29] so what?
[00:43:31] Forget about yourself
[00:43:33] stop thinking about yourself
[00:43:35] and start thinking about the women
[00:43:37] and I remember taking a conference
[00:43:40] I took a workshop at a whim at a pastor's wife's retreat
[00:43:43] on fear
[00:43:44] and the pastor's wife there
[00:43:46] shared she said that she actually had like a fobio
[00:43:49] where she couldn't even come out of her house
[00:43:51] but she said something
[00:43:53] she said there need to be greater than your fear
[00:43:57] that the need of the people
[00:43:59] that you would understand
[00:44:00] the need of your women
[00:44:02] the need of your audience so much
[00:44:03] that your fear doesn't even matter
[00:44:06] that if you know what you're going through
[00:44:09] stop thinking about yourself
[00:44:10] and just thinking about the audience
[00:44:13] and so I tell myself that like man
[00:44:15] Sonia don't worry about yourself
[00:44:17] don't think about yourself
[00:44:18] who cares if you have to be a fool for Christ
[00:44:20] you'd be a fool for Christ
[00:44:21] but you get up there and tell them what you want
[00:44:23] but I think about the people
[00:44:24] and I think about how excited I am
[00:44:27] about this thing that the Lord gave me
[00:44:29] and I'm like I'm so excited
[00:44:30] to share this with them
[00:44:32] because I know what it can do
[00:44:35] they will just listen and obey it
[00:44:37] and so I think about that
[00:44:39] I think about the ladies
[00:44:40] I think about what God wants to do in their lives
[00:44:42] and when I'm thinking about them
[00:44:43] I lose myself
[00:44:44] and so when you're going to share
[00:44:46] and you're starting to hear
[00:44:47] if your person who gets nervous
[00:44:48] or gets scared
[00:44:49] just tell yourself like you know
[00:44:51] so what
[00:44:52] I'm going to think more about them
[00:44:54] than I think about myself
[00:44:56] and then expect and depend
[00:44:58] on the power of the Holy Spirit to show up
[00:45:02] Every time I'm going to teach
[00:45:03] I tell God, Lord
[00:45:05] I don't want to get up
[00:45:06] that you're not going to be there
[00:45:07] My God's not going to happen
[00:45:08] When I get up there
[00:45:09] I fully expect you to be there
[00:45:11] I fully expect that you and I
[00:45:13] are going to do this hand in hand
[00:45:15] I tell God
[00:45:16] I want to remain as desperate for you
[00:45:18] as I was the first time I shared
[00:45:21] at my own church with the women
[00:45:23] I want to remain that desperate
[00:45:25] I want to know that I need God
[00:45:27] that I need the Holy Spirit
[00:45:28] as much today talking to you
[00:45:30] as I did when I shared that first time
[00:45:33] because we are so dependent on him
[00:45:36] how much you know that you depend
[00:45:39] on what you expect to do
[00:45:42] I'm trying to change lives
[00:45:44] I'm trying to bring life to dead places
[00:45:48] I cannot do that
[00:45:49] I am desperate
[00:45:51] I need the Holy Spirit
[00:45:52] but if you're just trying to say a good message
[00:45:55] and you're just trying to give some good advice
[00:45:57] and you know what?
[00:45:58] You could probably do that without the Holy Spirit
[00:46:01] Feel free to get up there
[00:46:03] and share something
[00:46:04] and maybe somebody might be really impressed
[00:46:06] and you'll like what you said
[00:46:08] and you can hear it back
[00:46:09] and you would be like, yeah, that was good
[00:46:11] I don't want to do that
[00:46:13] so when I teach, I fully expect
[00:46:16] and depend on the power of the Holy Spirit
[00:46:19] because what I hope to do
[00:46:22] because I know the Bible says he wants to do
[00:46:24] can only be done by the power of the Holy Spirit
[00:46:27] so I tell him like, Lord, don't let me get up there
[00:46:30] and I don't fear your Holy Spirit upon me
[00:46:33] I want to know that you're with me
[00:46:35] well there's dangers
[00:46:36] the Bible says that there are dangers
[00:46:38] and being a teacher of the Word of God
[00:46:42] and the Holy Spirit says, I want to know
[00:46:43] and the Holy Spirit says, I charge you there
[00:46:44] for before God
[00:46:46] and the Lord Jesus Christ who will judge the living
[00:46:49] and the dead
[00:46:50] at His appearing
[00:46:52] and at His kingdom
[00:46:54] preach the Word
[00:46:55] be ready in season and out of season
[00:46:58] convince, rebuked, exorbed
[00:47:00] with all wrongs suffering
[00:47:01] and teaching
[00:47:02] for the time will come
[00:47:04] when they will not endure sound doctrine
[00:47:07] but according to their own desires
[00:47:09] they will have itching ears
[00:47:12] and they will heap up for themselves teachers
[00:47:14] and they will turn their ears away from the truth
[00:47:18] and be turned aside to fables
[00:47:20] but you'll be watchful in all things
[00:47:23] endure afflictions
[00:47:25] and do the work of an evangelist
[00:47:28] fulfill your ministry
[00:47:30] so here Paul described
[00:47:32] a day where people would no longer endure sound doctrine
[00:47:36] a time when instead of people going
[00:47:38] to a Bible teaching church
[00:47:40] and repenting
[00:47:41] when the Word of God pointed out their sin
[00:47:43] they simply leave
[00:47:44] and find a church that teaches less Bible
[00:47:47] and less conviction
[00:47:49] there have been people who have gone up
[00:47:51] to my husband and said, you know what?
[00:47:53] we're leaving
[00:47:53] because I just get convicted
[00:47:55] too much here
[00:47:56] and day
[00:47:57] and my husband says, well you know what?
[00:47:59] I call those blessed subtractions go ahead
[00:48:02] like you're not going
[00:48:04] you should never want to go somewhere
[00:48:06] where the Lord is not trying to stretch you a little bit more
[00:48:09] grow you a little bit more
[00:48:11] correct the things that we are still in air
[00:48:13] and so here he says that the day is coming
[00:48:16] when people would not have a tolerance for that anymore
[00:48:19] and yes there are people today
[00:48:20] who are looking for teachers
[00:48:22] who will tell them what they want to hear
[00:48:24] and Paul is telling us that we need to be watchful
[00:48:28] we need to do the work of an evangelist
[00:48:31] we are not motivational speakers
[00:48:33] we are not life coaches
[00:48:36] we must stay the course
[00:48:39] and we must fulfill our ministry
[00:48:42] do not get tempted to change your course
[00:48:45] or alter your message
[00:48:47] in order to keep people from getting offended
[00:48:50] or leaving
[00:48:51] like Paul and Timothy
[00:48:53] you and I too will give an account one day
[00:48:56] for every word spoken on and off the pulpit
[00:49:01] and so we cannot get tempted
[00:49:03] to do something that just for the sake of keeping people
[00:49:07] James 3-1 says my brethren
[00:49:10] let on many of you become teachers
[00:49:13] knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment
[00:49:17] we know better
[00:49:18] or at least we should
[00:49:20] so God expects more from us
[00:49:23] listen you and I have a bigger impact
[00:49:25] so when he says that there is a stricter judgment
[00:49:30] for teachers it's because when you have an audience
[00:49:33] when you get to impact people
[00:49:35] and you're not impacting them with the word of God
[00:49:38] when you're giving something lesser
[00:49:40] than the word of God
[00:49:42] there is a stricter judgment
[00:49:44] because you cause greater damage than the average person
[00:49:48] considering that teachers will receive a stricter judgment
[00:49:51] I want to discourage you from teaching
[00:49:54] if any of these are true about you
[00:49:57] don't teach the word if you are not a believer of the word
[00:50:02] don't teach it if you don't believe it
[00:50:04] before it was ever written down
[00:50:06] before the ink could even dry
[00:50:08] Satan was already causing men to question it
[00:50:12] to doubt it
[00:50:13] and men was already challenging the Bible
[00:50:15] saying did God really say
[00:50:18] considering the words of the enemy
[00:50:20] is this still relevant?
[00:50:22] does it still apply? Does God really mean what he said?
[00:50:26] and so if you don't believe it, don't teach it
[00:50:29] second Corinthians 4 or 13 says
[00:50:32] and since we have the same spirit of faith
[00:50:36] according to what is written
[00:50:38] I believe and therefore I spoke
[00:50:41] we also believe and therefore we speak
[00:50:46] if you don't believe don't speak it
[00:50:50] because there is that greater judgment
[00:50:52] that is going to come upon you
[00:50:54] the next one is don't teach the word
[00:50:56] if you are not called to be the teacher
[00:51:00] don't force it at home at church
[00:51:03] not everyone who desires to be the teacher should be
[00:51:08] some do it for the wrong reasons
[00:51:10] and some are simply to squalify it and shouldn't do it
[00:51:15] be careful that you don't do something
[00:51:17] God never asked you to do
[00:51:20] I'm thinking about in the Old Testament King Saul
[00:51:22] if you remember King he was the King
[00:51:25] and there were things that were his responsibility
[00:51:27] and there were things that he could do
[00:51:30] and that he should do
[00:51:31] and then there were things that only Samuel
[00:51:33] the prophets should do
[00:51:35] and so in 1 Samuel 13, 1114
[00:51:39] we read this account
[00:51:40] where the King did something that was not for him to do
[00:51:44] and it says and Samuel said
[00:51:46] what have you done?
[00:51:48] Saul said when I saw the people
[00:51:50] were scattered from me and that you did not come
[00:51:54] within the days appointed
[00:51:55] and that the Philistines gathered together
[00:51:58] and Mishmash then I said
[00:52:00] the Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgall
[00:52:04] and I have not made supplication to the Lord
[00:52:07] therefore I felt compelled
[00:52:10] and offered a burnt offering
[00:52:12] and Samuel said to Saul you have done foolishly
[00:52:16] you have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God
[00:52:20] which he commanded you
[00:52:22] for now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever
[00:52:26] but now your kingdom shall not continue
[00:52:29] the Lord has sought for himself a man after his own heart
[00:52:32] and the Lord has commanded him
[00:52:35] to be the commander over the people
[00:52:37] because you have not kept with the Lord
[00:52:40] commanded you listen don't teach the Bible
[00:52:43] if you are not the right person for the job
[00:52:46] God desires obedience over sacrifice
[00:52:50] you and I cannot tell God
[00:52:53] this is what I want to do
[00:52:55] you cannot bring your sacrifice to the Lord
[00:52:59] the way King did
[00:53:00] and said I know that you wanted this from me
[00:53:04] I know this is the sacrifice you were asking for
[00:53:06] but this is what I want to give you
[00:53:10] you and I don't get to do that
[00:53:13] if God has not asked you to do it
[00:53:16] you can find yourself over stepping God's boundaries
[00:53:19] and contradicting God's word
[00:53:22] when it comes to teaching God's word
[00:53:24] there are settings
[00:53:26] and audiences that God has allowed us as women to teach in
[00:53:30] we need to be careful not to overstep our boundaries
[00:53:33] and place ourselves in a position
[00:53:36] that God never intended us to fail
[00:53:39] even in my home
[00:53:40] I remember a time when my husband
[00:53:42] wasn't really walking with the Lord
[00:53:44] and I would have to do devotions at home with my boys
[00:53:47] and so I was teaching the word of God to them
[00:53:51] and doing this
[00:53:53] but I longed for the day when my husband
[00:53:55] could be the leader of the home
[00:53:56] that he could be the one who could be the one
[00:53:59] who could teach
[00:54:00] and you know what when he eventually got to that point
[00:54:03] even if I could do the job better
[00:54:05] even if I could argue that I could do a better job
[00:54:08] it didn't matter
[00:54:09] just because I could do it didn't mean that I should
[00:54:11] my husband needed to take that position
[00:54:14] and so I need to make sure that
[00:54:16] it doesn't matter whether I can do it
[00:54:18] it's whether or not I should
[00:54:20] they got asked me for this sacrifice
[00:54:22] is this what the Lord has asked me to do
[00:54:25] because I don't want to overstep his boundaries
[00:54:28] there were so many ways
[00:54:30] that the king could have done something for the Lord
[00:54:33] but sacrifice him was not in his lane
[00:54:37] there are so many things that God has asked you
[00:54:40] and I to do
[00:54:41] there are so many ways that he has equipped us
[00:54:43] to come alongside and do a work for him
[00:54:45] we need to focus on those things
[00:54:47] and not be like even focus on the one thing
[00:54:50] that God has not asked you to do
[00:54:52] focus on the things that God has asked you to do
[00:54:55] and stay away from the things that the Lord clearly has said
[00:54:58] that they are not for you to do
[00:55:01] let's not allow Satan to tempt us
[00:55:04] and make us crave
[00:55:05] the very thing that God has said
[00:55:07] we should not have any part of
[00:55:10] the next thing is don't teach the word of God
[00:55:13] if you don't plan to obey the word
[00:55:15] like a crooked cop who breaks the law
[00:55:18] he is claiming to uphold
[00:55:19] is the teacher of God's word
[00:55:21] who disobeyes it
[00:55:23] Matthew 23, 1 through 13, 1 through 3 says
[00:55:26] then Jesus spoke to the multitude
[00:55:28] and to his disciples saying
[00:55:30] the scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses a seat
[00:55:34] therefore whatever they tell you
[00:55:36] observe that observe that observe
[00:55:39] and do but do not do according to their works
[00:55:43] for they say and do not do
[00:55:45] and then in Romans 2, 21 through 24
[00:55:48] it says you therefore who teach another
[00:55:50] do you not teach yourself
[00:55:52] you who preach that a man should not steal
[00:55:55] do you steal?
[00:55:58] you who say do not commit adultery
[00:55:59] do you commit adultery?
[00:56:02] you who appoor idols
[00:56:03] do you rob temples?
[00:56:05] you who make your boast in the law
[00:56:07] do you dishonor God
[00:56:09] through the breaking of the law
[00:56:11] for the name of God is blasphemed
[00:56:14] among the Gentiles because of you
[00:56:18] because of you
[00:56:19] it wasn't the people outside of the church
[00:56:21] it was the people inside of the church
[00:56:23] it was the people who should know better
[00:56:26] that we are keeping the unbelievers
[00:56:27] from coming to God
[00:56:29] and he says because they were saying
[00:56:30] one thing and they were doing another
[00:56:32] and he says that should not be us
[00:56:34] your life will either
[00:56:37] strengthen or weaken your message
[00:56:40] I heard a story
[00:56:42] Dr. Clarence McCartney actually has this quote
[00:56:46] and he says
[00:56:47] the better the man, the better the preacher
[00:56:50] when he kneels by the bed of the dying
[00:56:53] or when he mounts the pulpit stairs
[00:56:55] then every self-denial he has made
[00:56:59] every Christian forbearance he has shown
[00:57:02] every resistance of sin and temptation
[00:57:04] will come back to him
[00:57:06] and strengthen his arms
[00:57:07] and give him conviction to his voice
[00:57:10] but likewise
[00:57:11] every aversion of duty
[00:57:13] every indulgence of self
[00:57:15] every compromise of evil
[00:57:19] every unworthy thought
[00:57:20] word or deed will be there
[00:57:22] at the head of the pulpit stairs
[00:57:25] to meet the minister on Sunday morning
[00:57:27] to take the light from his eyes
[00:57:29] the power from his brow
[00:57:31] and the ring from his voice
[00:57:33] and the joy from his heart
[00:57:34] how you live will either give you conviction
[00:57:38] when you teach
[00:57:39] or it's going to weaken your message
[00:57:41] so if you have no intention of obeying it
[00:57:44] don't live it
[00:57:47] In closing I want to encourage you
[00:57:50] to have the courage
[00:57:51] to share the word of God
[00:57:53] whether they hear you or not
[00:57:55] easy kills three
[00:57:57] verses 10 through 11
[00:57:59] says more over he sets me
[00:58:01] Son of man
[00:58:02] receive into your heart
[00:58:03] all my words
[00:58:05] that I speak to you
[00:58:06] and hear with your ears
[00:58:08] and go
[00:58:09] get the captives
[00:58:11] go to the children of your people
[00:58:13] and speak to them
[00:58:14] tell them thus
[00:58:15] says the Lord God
[00:58:17] whether they hear or whether they refuse
[00:58:20] their response was not his problem
[00:58:23] listen your audience
[00:58:24] their response is not your problem
[00:58:27] that is between them and God
[00:58:29] we just need to be faithful
[00:58:30] to deliver the message
[00:58:32] Amen
[00:58:33] let's pray
[00:58:35] Lord we want to come
[00:58:36] before you
[00:58:38] it's not easy Lord these days
[00:58:41] to be the messenger
[00:58:43] Lord it's never been easy
[00:58:46] to be your messenger
[00:58:48] not in the Old Testament
[00:58:50] not in the New Testament
[00:58:52] Lord in you said
[00:58:54] that if they hated you they will hate us
[00:58:58] and that a servant was not greater than his master
[00:59:01] Lord we are your servants
[00:59:03] and you are the master
[00:59:05] what you say we will teach Lord
[00:59:07] may we stay true to the course that you've said before us
[00:59:11] and then no matter who our audience is Lord
[00:59:14] that we would be simple
[00:59:16] that you may be powerful
[00:59:18] in your precious name we pray
[00:59:20] Amen
